About

This page is not about Spain, but about this blog and about me. The primary reason I am writing this blog is to shed light on so many of the wonderful sights to see in Spain. Despite the fact that Spain is one of the most visited countries in the world, tourists often limit themselves to walk along the downtrodden paths of so many tourists before them. They drink sangría in a touristic restaurant on the Rambla, because that is what they believe is the Spanish way. Or they place their beach towel on the Malvarrosa beach in Valencia, if they can find enough space to do so.

Spain has so much more to offer for those who are willing to venture off the beaten track. Spain has a rich and varied culture, cuisine and even climate. Spain is the country in Europe with the most diverse climate. This diverse climate conditions a varied landscape from damp and cool in the green north, to arid desert landscapes in the interior and southeast.

What is holding many people back, I guess, is the linguistic limitations. Despite its mass tourism since the 1960s, Spain is not a country where English is widely spoken, and least of all, off the beaten track. However, what may seem as a drawback is also a means by which Spain has preserved its unique culture passed down the generations. Let's face it, anyone who wants to immerse him- or herself in another culture has to at one point bridge the communication gap. Don't expect the Spanish to speak English, learn some Spanish for a much richer experience. It is well worth it as the more you know about Spain, the more you would want to find out!

Hopefully, this blog can help you take the first steps. I intend to give you some information to learn more about Spain, and give you the desire to explore those lesser known sights across this beautiful country. I will provide you with information on places to go, cuisine, and a little glossary to facilitate your communication.

I lived in Madrid for four years during which time I travelled extensively across continental Spain. I got to know every nook and cranny of Spain, and the most interesting experiences for me where always in places almost void of tourists. I want to share those experiences, so that hopefully your next trip to Spain could be just as memorable.

In my efforts to help you I often refer you to products or services I recommend. These products or services are part of Awin, a global affiliate network. Should you choose to purchase something, say, book a room in a hotel on TripAdvisor from a link I sent you, I may earn a small commission to no extra cost for you. These commissions are invaluable to me in meeting the running costs of this blog, and make it worthwhile for me to do my best to help you discover true Spain.
